Tick Tick Boom is the story of a starving artist and the struggles that come with waiting for your “big break”. I felt an immediate connection to this story. Jonathan Larson managed to perfectly capture the all-consuming nature that a love of theater holds.
One of the goals of this show was to create a collaboration of artists. I accomplished this by displaying community art and publications from the local high school’s Zine Club. I also organized the teen center’s first live pit since before the pandemic, including both student and professional musicians.
This was also my first time working with a full cast of college students. This allowed me to push my directing even further as the performers came with a high level of experience and professionalism. Their skill gave my creativity greater flexibility as they were equipped to handle challenges.
Over all this show helped me cope with my upcoming transition to adulthood. Telling a story about a person willing to give everything for his dreams was deeply cathartic as I am similarly committed to this art form.
