When I read this play it felt like curling up on the couch with a warm cup of hot cocoa. It was so important to me to make the audience feel this way. The story is not an insane journey or a flashy musical. It is special because this family loves each other, even when they drive each other crazy. It is a show built on love and sisterhood and I felt a obligation to make sure the whole show was driven by those feelings

In this production I paid extra attention to the placement of characters to create beautiful images. I wanted to display the family dynamics through how and where they stood. In one scene the whole family goes around the couch to hear a letter from their father. There were two seats on the couch. The first goes to the mother and the second went to Meg who is the oldest sister and often a second mom. To Meg’s right sat Amy, the youngest sister who gravitates toward Meg and her way of life. On the other side of the mother was Beth leaning on Jo. These two sisters were extremely close and often balanced each other out. In the end I had composed a stage picture that was not only appealing but also told you about the characters themselves.
