Twisted has two fun-filled acts of laughter and joy. I felt that it was my job to add my own layer of silliness. I made choices that would be fun for the actors to do and for the audience to watch. It is always the goal as a director to encourage powerful emotions in our audience. During Twisted I embraced joy.
As this show was staged in the public library, our funding for special effects was limited, but the creativity and energy of our actors was not. I made the decision to cast an actor as “magic” to playfully step in at moments where other stages may have used expensive tricks. My favorite moment is when a very exhausted “magic” laid on the stage after the climactic flying carpet ride – which involved him rolling a table rhythmically carrying our beautiful princess and aspiring prince around while they belted out a love song.
